What it's about
Aunt May is dying from a bullet meant for Peter, and no doctor, hero or sorcerer can save her. In One More Day, Peter and Mary Jane are offered a way out by Mephisto, at a terrible price. In Brand New Day, Spider-Man wakes up to a changed world: his secret identity is secret again, old friends are back, and new enemies such as Mister Negative are rising.
Why it matters
One More Day is the most argued-about Spider-Man story ever written, and Brand New Day, which came straight after it, is one of the most fun eras of the series: a rotating team of writers telling street-level stories three times a month. The 2026 film Spider-Man: Brand New Day borrows the name and the idea of a fresh start, though its story is its own: our guide to the film.
The big twist (spoilers)
Show the spoilers
To save May's life, Peter and Mary Jane agree to let Mephisto erase their marriage from history. In the new timeline they were never married, the world has forgotten Spider-Man's identity, and Harry Osborn is alive.
