Spoiler warningThis article gives away the whole plot of Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026), including the ending and the post-credits scene. For the spoiler-free facts, see our guide to the film.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day picks up four years after the spell at the end of No Way Home erased Peter Parker from everyone's memory. Peter has kept it that way. He never told MJ or Ned who he is, he lives alone, and he spends his nights as a Spider-Man nobody can put a name to. The ending is about what that choice has cost him, and what he decides to do about it.

The short version

The ending in four sentences

The telepath is Jean Grey, a teenager whose sister, Sara, died in the custody of the Department of Damage Control. Peter stops Jean from killing the agency's director, Bill Metzger, and is badly hurt shielding her from Frank Castle's shot. Jean keeps him alive, then leaves the city, while Metzger disappears and Damage Control is investigated. At May's grave, Peter decides to stop doing everything alone, and Ned recognizes him.

Who is the telepath?

For most of the film, the villain is a presence in other people's heads: someone who can take over a person's body, who helps Scorpion escape from a Damage Control prison, and who keeps raiding Damage Control sites in search of something called V-Max. The one mind the telepath cannot get into is Peter's.

When the telepath tracks Peter to his apartment, reads an unsent letter he wrote to MJ and nearly kills her by possessing her, Peter finally sees who is behind it: Jean Grey, played by Sadie Sink, a teenage girl. In the comics, Jean is one of the five original X-Men (X-Men #1, 1963). The film introduces her on her own.

What Damage Control was hiding

Bill Metzger (Tramell Tillman) runs the Department of Damage Control, and he has started using the Hand, a clan of ninja, as its security force. He says he has never heard of V-Max. When Jean is finally captured, she says her sister's name before she passes out, and Metzger claims it is the name of a colleague he was thinking about while she possessed him. MJ, who now knows what being possessed feels like, gives Peter the reason to doubt him.

Yelena Belova finds the proof in redacted files: Sara Grey was Jean's sister, another telepath Damage Control had taken. In the climax, Jean explains V-Max at last. It was the label on an air vent, the last thing Sara saw before she died. Jean has been tearing through the city looking for answers about her sister's death.

Why Peter takes off the inhibitor

Peter's powers change during the film. He wakes up with sharper senses and webs that come from his own wrists, and when the telepath attacks through a possessed Scorpion, Peter loses control and beats him badly; a police officer is hurt in the fight. Bruce Banner, who uses an inhibitor to keep the Hulk in check, helps him, and Peter builds one of his own.

In the final fight, at a Damage Control facility on Roosevelt Island, Jean freezes everyone around her in a psychic field, everyone except Peter, and turns the Hand on him. Peter takes the inhibitor off and stops fighting what he is becoming. With his full powers he beats the Hand and stops Jean from killing Metzger. The film's point is that the new powers were never the real problem. Trying to carry everything by himself was.

The Punisher's shot

Instead of fighting Jean, Peter lets her into his mind, where she sees a memory of May telling him she loves him for who he is. Two people grieving someone they lost finally understand each other. Then Frank Castle, the Punisher, fires at Jean from a distance. Peter puts himself in the way and is critically wounded, and Jean lets the field drop.

Peter wakes up in a hospital with a guilty Castle beside him, who tells him that Jean kept him alive from afar.

How the film ends

Jean leaves New York; the film does not say where she goes. Metzger vanishes before he can answer for anything, and Damage Control is put under investigation. At May's grave, Peter promises to stop trying to do everything alone, and he leaves a robbery to Detective Jean DeWolff while he heals.

Then he runs into Ned and greets him with their old secret handshake, and Ned recognizes him. After four years of being forgotten by choice, Peter has someone who knows who he is again.

The post-credits scene

The film has one extra scene, at the very end of the credits. Ned's Spider-Man tracking app picks up a Spider-Man sighting, and the location is not on Earth.

The film does not explain it, and as of October 2026 neither Sony nor Marvel Studios has announced what comes next. It could point to another Spider-Man, to a story set in space, or to nothing that has been planned yet.
